What is Proton Therapy?

Proton therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses protons, or positively charged particles, instead of X-rays to destroy cancer cells. Unlike traditional radiation therapy, proton therapy delivers most of its energy directly to the tumor with minimal radiation to surrounding healthy tissue. This precision reduces side effects and is especially beneficial for treating tumors near vital organs or in children.

How does Proton Therapy work?

When charged particles like protons travel through the body, they gradually lose energy, but release most of that energy at a specific depth—right before they stop. This sharp spike in energy release is called the Bragg Peak. Think of a bullet that slows down and only explodes when it hits the exact target.

The benefits of Proton Therapy

Maximum dose to the tumor: The Bragg Peak can be aligned with the tumor’s location, so the tumor gets the full force of the radiation.

Minimal damage to healthy tissue: Because the radiation drops off sharply after the Bragg Peak, surrounding healthy tissue receives very little exposure. Traditional X-ray radiation, by contrast, passes through the body, affecting both the tissue in front of and behind the tumor. Proton therapy helps patients maintain their quality of life during and after treatment.

Is Proton Therapy right for me?

Speak with a radiation oncologist familiar with proton therapy. There is no “one size fits all” cancer treatment. We offer free consultations to review your case and provide personalized recommendations. Our specialists will be able to evaluate your options for treatment and how insurance can help with coverage. Our goal is to help you maintain your quality of life during and after treatment.

Proton Therapy advantages

Proton beams stop at the tumor and don’t travel beyond it. This means less harm to nearby organs, muscles, and nerves. As a result, patients are less likely to suffer long-term complications. Other advantages:

1. Fewer side effects

Because healthy tissues are spared, patients often experience less fatigue, nausea,or pain. This helps them stay active, work, and continue daily routines duringtreatment.

2. Lower Risk of Secondary Cancers

Especially important for children and young adults, since reduced exposure to healthy tissues lowers the chance of developing cancer later from the radiation itself.

3. Better Long-Term Outcomes

Patients often recover faster and have fewer chronic issues, helping them return to normal life sooner and stay healthier long-term.
